Install OpenVPN on Linux
Guide to setting up your own Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- 1Step 1
Download Install Script
The easiest way to install OpenVPN is using a trusted automated installation script.
wget https://git.io/vpn -O openvpn-install.sh - 2Step 2
Make Executable
Give the file execution permissions so you can run it.
chmod +x openvpn-install.sh - 3Step 3
Run Script
Start the installation process and follow the on-screen instructions.
sudo ./openvpn-install.sh - 4Step 4
Installation Options
During installation, you'll be asked to choose protocol (UDP recommended), port (default 1194), and DNS provider. You can press Enter to accept defaults.
- 5Step 5
Create Client Config
At the end, you'll be asked for a client name. Type a name like 'myvpn' and a .ovpn file will be generated.
- 6Step 6
Transfer Config File
Now transfer the .ovpn file to your personal device to use with OpenVPN Connect.
cat /root/myvpn.ovpn - 7Step 7
Manage Users
To add a new user or remove one, run the script again.
sudo ./openvpn-install.sh
