File Transfer using FTP & FileZilla
How to create FTP accounts and manage site files remotely
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows you to upload and download large files quickly using software like FileZilla. Here's how to set it up.
- 1Step 1
Create New FTP Account
In cPanel, go to 'FTP Accounts'. Enter a username (becomes [email protected]), choose a strong password, and define the directory this user can access (e.g., public_html for full access).
- 2Step 2
Download FileZilla
Download the free 'FileZilla Client' from its official website and install it on your computer.
- 3Step 3
Connect to Server
Open FileZilla. In Host, type 'ftp.yourdomain.com'. In Username, type the full username you created. In Password, type the password. Port is usually 21. Click Quickconnect.
- 4Step 4
Transfer Files
Once connected, you'll see your PC files on the left and server files on the right. Drag files from left to right to upload, or vice versa to download.
Tips for Secure FTP Usage
- Use 'SFTP' if available (usually Port 22) to encrypt the connection.
- Restrict directory access for additional users instead of giving full site access.
- Do not save passwords on public computers or cafes.
- Use 'FileZilla' as it is open-source and trusted.
